What is zero-knowledge architecture?
Zero-knowledge architecture ensures that only you know what’s stored in your vault. In cryptography, it means proving you know something without revealing what it is. The NordPass password manager is built on zero-knowledge architecture to keep the proof that you have the key—but not the key itself—and to protect your data even better.
No one else can see your passwords, credit card details, or notes without your authorization. NordPass also doesn’t store your Master Password, so your encrypted data remains secure even if someone were to breach our servers.
What is zero-knowledge cloud storage?
Our zero-knowledge architecture extends to cloud backup. NordPass encrypts all of your vault data locally, so we don’t know what’s inside when you back it up to our servers—neither would an intruder. This lets NordPass easily sync passwords across multiple devices without compromising your security.
How does zero-knowledge architecture work in NordPass?
When you create a NordPass account, you’re asked to set a Master Password. Make sure you remember it because we won’t! All the encryption and decryption take place right on your device – by the time your data reaches our servers for backup and sync, it’s secured from everyone, including us. We know nothing about your vault, and that’s what zero-knowledge architecture is all about.

Zero-knowledge architecture helps protect your data from unauthorized exposure in case of a data breach. Attackers cannot read any encrypted data without a Master Password for decryption. By not storing your Master Password in our databases, we make it harder for unauthorized parties to obtain your data.
Zero-knowledge architecture also protects your privacy. When we back up your data to our servers, it’s already encrypted. Neither NordPass nor any potential intruders can tell what you have stored in your NordPass vault. If a third party asked for your details, we simply would have nothing to give.
What happens if zero-knowledge architecture is breached?
If our databases were breached and the encrypted data were obtained, the backups that intruders would gain access to would all be encrypted. That’s because NordPass does not store the Master Password required to decrypt the data. Without the Master Password, all information would be scrambled and inaccessible to anyone but you.
