Snapchat reset password

You’ve just swapped to a new phone and need to log in to all your social media accounts again. What a nuisance. You created your Snapchat account years ago and have never had to log in and out of it, so what on earth are the login details? Looks like it’s time to reset your password. In today’s guide, we’ll go over the steps of how to reset your Snapchat password and change it to a new and stronger one.

How to reset your Snapchat password

Snapchat uses three key pieces of information to verify the user’s identity: their username, email address, and phone number. The latter two are needed to easily reset your Snapchat password in-app. However, the service offers an alternative web reset option in case you can’t access your inbox, or you’ve changed your phone number and haven’t updated it in your account settings. Let’s see how each Snapchat password reset method works.

Resetting your Snapchat password via email

  1. Launch Snapchat and select “Log in.” Then, tap “Forgot your password?”

  2. You’ll be given two options to reset your password: by phone or email. Let’s choose email first.

  3. Enter the email address associated with your Snapchat account and tap “Send confirmation code.”

  4. Check your inbox for a Snapchat email with the confirmation code. Enter the code in the app, and you will automatically log in to your account.

Once you’ve logged in, you can reset your password from the app settings:

  5. Go to your account settings and select “Password.”

  6. You will be prompted to enter your current password. Tap “Forgot your password?”

  7. Likewise, you’ll have two options for the reset: phone or email. Here, select email.

  8. Enter your email address and tap “Submit.”

  9. Check your inbox for a Snapchat email with the link to reset your password. Keep in mind it might be filtered to your Spam folder.

  10. Tap the link. It will redirect you to a page where you can input a new password. You can use a password checker to see if your new password meets the Snapchat security criteria.

  11. Congratulations! You’ve reset your Snapchat password.

Resetting your Snapchat password via SMS

  1. Let’s pick back up at step 2 of the previous guide. However, this time, choose to reset your password with a phone number.

  2. Enter the phone number associated with your Snapchat account and tap “Submit.”

  3. You should receive a text with a verification code. Input the code into the app or tap “Continue.” Note that Snapchat may detect the message and automatically fill it in for you.

You can now reset the password in the app settings.

  4. Go to your account settings and select “Password.”

  5. You will be prompted to enter your current password. Tap “Forgot your password?”

  6. Now, choose to reset your password via phone.

  7. Enter your phone number and tap “Verify.”

  8. You will receive a text message with a verification code. If the code is not autofilled for you, input it into the field and tap “Continue.”

  9. You will be redirected to the password reset screen. Enter your new password and tap “Save.”

  10. Congratulations! Your password has been updated.

Resetting your Snapchat password via a web browser

If you’re having trouble resetting your Snapchat password via the app, you can use a web or mobile browser.

  1. Go to the Snapchat password reset request page.

  2. Enter your email address and click “Submit.”

  3. Check your inbox for a verification email. It may be filtered in your Spam folder.

  4. Open the link in the email, enter your new password, and tap “Save.”

  5. Congratulations! You’ve reset your Snapchat password.

As far as password resets go, Snapchat is probably one of the quickest ones to deal with. Unfortunately, if you don’t remember the email address or phone number linked to the account, the only chance to recover your account is to contact Snapchat customer service directly.

How to change your Snapchat password

  1. Open the Snapchat app and go to your account settings.

  2. Scroll down and select “Password.”

  3. Enter your old password and tap “Continue.”

  4. Now enter and confirm your new password.

  5. Tap “Save” to update your password.

I think my Snapchat account was hacked. What should I do?

One sign that your Snapchat is being used by someone else is the app constantly asking for your login details. Normally, once you’re logged in, that’s it. Snapchat remembers your device and keeps you logged in until you log out manually or uninstall the app. So if the app keeps prompting you to enter your password, someone else might be sharing your account without your knowledge.

Unauthorized activity, like snaps or messages you didn't send or receive but your contacts report having received, unknown names popping up in your contact list, and changes to your profile or settings that you didn't make, also indicate an account breach.

If you suspect your account was breached, reset your password immediately. If you tend to reuse passwords across multiple accounts, a single hacked account can put all of them in danger. Update the credentials of all such accounts and ensure they have different, strong passwords. However, if you’ve found that you’re completely locked out of your account, getting in touch with Snapchat customer support is your only option.
