Password manager comparison:
NordPass vs. 1Password

See how NordPass and 1Password measure up when it comes to functionality.

1Password

Encryption

NordPass is currently the only major password manager using XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF, a cutting-edge encryption algorithm. Unlike AES-based systems, XChaCha20 doesn’t rely on hardware acceleration. It offers stronger resistance to timing attacks and is easier to implement securely.

1Password secures data with AES-GCM-256, a widely used encryption standard.

Password Policy

NordPass allows organizations to set specific requirements for passwords stored in the vault, ensuring strong criteria are enforced across the company. Its Password Generator helps employees create secure passwords that comply with the policy. Businesses can also actively monitor their teams’ compliance with these requirements.

1Password uses its own criteria to determine what qualifies as a weak password, which may not align with an organization’s internal policies. While admins can set stricter rules for the password generator, users can still create or import passwords that fall below those standards. As a result, noncompliant passwords may go undetected, since 1Password evaluates password strength based on its own framework rather than the company’s policies.

Data breach scanner

NordPass provides more detailed information on detected data breaches, including hashed passwords, email addresses, API keys from third-party systems, and bank details. It also offers credit card monitoring for individual users.

1Password’s Watchtower scans for compromised websites and passwords, with reports organized by vault or team. However, the reports are limited, as they don’t specify what type of data was leaked unless a password was directly involved. Credit card monitoring is not available.

Account recovery

Users can recover their accounts using a Recovery Code or by requesting recovery from the organization’s Owner, with no prior enrollment or configuration required. This ensures a smooth recovery process.

Admins can assist users in recovering their accounts at any time. Users receive an email prompting them to verify their identity and create a new password, after which the admin completes the recovery process. Once finished, users regain access to their accounts and are prompted to save a new Emergency Kit.

Data recovery after user deletion

NordPass retains data from deleted user vaults, even if it was never shared. Admins can recover this data and transfer it to another user, ensuring nothing is lost, and business continuity is maintained.

After a user is deleted, any data stored in their private vault cannot be recovered. Shared vaults, however, remain accessible to the rest of the organization.

Synchronized peer-to-peer sharing

NordPass gives users precise control over shared items, including setting access levels and defining expiration times for shared credentials or data through Time-Limited Sharing.

1Password doesn’t support synchronized, peer-to-peer sharing. Instead, access permissions are managed centrally by admins or delegated to specific users. Data can be shared via time-limited links, but these links offer no access control, can be shared outside the organization, and do not sync changes made after sharing.

Control over sharing

The Owner role provides full visibility into all shared folders and peer-to-peer shared items across the organization. Owners can see who created each item, who has access, and what permissions have been granted. They can also grant, adjust, or revoke access rights for any shared item or folder at any time.

1Password gives admins full visibility and control over shared vaults across the organization. Peer-to-peer sharing, however, is limited to shared links. Once an item is shared this way, there is no visibility or control over it.

Built-in TOTP authenticator retaining a second factor

NordPass includes a built-in Authenticator that works across all devices and helps reduce the friction that leads to MFA fatigue. It allows employees to use a single tool for multiple authentication methods while keeping security strong and maintaining a simple user experience.

1Password stores and autofills TOTPs on all devices. However, accessing these codes does not require a second-factor verification step, which weakens the overall effectiveness of 2FA.

Built-in email masking

No additional service is needed to use the Email Masking feature.

Email masking requires a Fastmail inbox to function.

It is more reactive and works faster than the competition. NordPass also matches the cost-effectiveness ratio, but the bottom line is that it was selected because it is easy and convenient to use.
