Password manager comparison:
NordPass vs Bitwarden

Find out how NordPass stacks up against Bitwarden in terms of functionality.

Bitwarden

Encryption

NordPass uses XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF, an encryption algorithm considered to offer stronger security and better performance compared to the widely used AES-256. It helps reduce exposure to timing attacks, is easier to implement, and supports flexible security parameters.

Bitwarden uses the end-to-end  AES-GCM-256 encryption algorithm.

Password policy

NordPass enables organizations to define specific password requirements for all items stored in the vault. This approach ensures consistent security standards across the company. In addition, its Password Generator helps employees create secure passwords that comply with these policies. Businesses can also monitor whether their teams comply with these requirements.

Bitwarden offers a customizable Password Policy feature that allows organizations to define and enforce their own specific password requirements. Admins can set rules for password complexity and length to ensure that passwords stored in the organization’s vault align with internal security standards. This feature helps maintain consistent password hygiene and enables organizations to monitor compliance across the entire organization.

Data breach scanner

NordPass delivers detailed insights into detected data breaches, including exposed hashed passwords, email addresses, third-party API keys, and banking information. It also includes credit card monitoring for individual users.

Bitwarden provides a basic report on compromised websites but does not include detailed insights into the types of data exposed. It also lacks credit card monitoring functionality.

Account recovery

Users can restore access to their accounts either with a recovery code or by submitting a recovery request to the Organization Owner, without any prior setup or configuration. This helps ensure a smooth and straightforward recovery process.

Users can regain access to their accounts using a recovery code. Admins can also restore access for employees who forgot their master password, but only if account recovery is enabled and users are enrolled automatically or through self-enrollment. Without enrollment, account recovery is not possible.

Data recovery after the user is deleted

NordPass retains data from deleted user vaults, even if it has never been shared. Administrators can restore this data and transfer it to another user to ensure no information is lost.

When an organization deletes a user, it cannot recover any non-shared data from that user’s vault. Only shared Collections remain available to the organization.

Peer-to-peer sharing

NordPass gives users control over shared items, with options to define access levels and expiration times via Time-Limited Sharing.

Synchronized peer-to-peer sharing is not supported. Instead, administrators must allow users to create Collections and handle permissions either on a per-user basis or through the admin interface. For direct sharing between users, Bitwarden Send can be used to distribute data via time-limited links. However, this method enables external sharing without ongoing access control and does not allow changes to be synchronized.

Organization-wide sharing control

The Owner role has full control over Shared Folders and peer-to-peer shared items in the organization. Owners can see who owns items, who has access, and what permissions are set. They can also give, change, or remove access to any shared item or folder at any time.

Bitwarden provides complete visibility and administrative control over all shared Collections within an organization. However, peer-to-peer sharing only works through shareable links, which cannot be tracked or controlled after they are created.

Built-in TOTP authenticator retaining a second factor

NordPass includes a built-in authenticator that generates and autofills TOTP codes across all devices. This helps reduce friction that can lead to MFA fatigue.

TOTPs can be stored and autofilled across all devices. However, because both the password and the TOTP code are kept in the same vault, gaining access to the vault exposes both authentication factors at once.

Built-in email masking

Users don’t need any extra services to use the Email Masking feature.

To use the Email Masking feature, users must have a Fastmail inbox.

It is more reactive and works faster than the competition. NordPass also matches the cost-effectiveness ratio, but the bottom line is that it was selected because it is easy and convenient to use.
