For those who spend most of their time in the command terminal—like developers and platform engineers—having to stop, open the NordPass app, search for a password, copy it, and switch back isn’t exactly convenient. That’s why we’re introducing the command line interface (CLI), a feature designed to help IT professionals stay in their flow and get things done faster.

What is the command line interface?
The CLI gives users direct access to their NordPass vault from the command window on their device. In other words, it allows them to perform NordPass-related tasks directly from the terminal.
This means that, instead of opening the NordPass app, users can type a few quick commands to manage their credentials efficiently, without ever leaving their working environment or manually copying and pasting anything.
Built specifically for developers, platform engineers, DevOps specialists, and other IT experts, the command line interface feature fits seamlessly into their workflows, helping them to stay productive without interruptions. And best of all, it runs standalone, with no need to install the NordPass desktop app. Signing in opens your browser once to authenticate. You then unlock your vault with your master password in the terminal to start working, and it stays unlocked until you lock it or it times out after a period of inactivity.
What can users do with the CLI feature?
The CLI isn’t designed for just one type of technical user. Whether you’re part of an IT team operating at scale or an individual managing personal projects, this feature enables you to perform the following NordPass-related actions in the command terminal:
Item management. Access, create, edit, and delete vault items.
Folder management. Create, list, edit, and delete personal folders, with options for personal and shared folder filtering (shared folders can be read only).
Trash management. Restore or permanently delete items.
Secret injection. Pass credentials straight into a running program without writing them to disk, or render a configuration file from a template that holds references instead of secrets.
Password and passphrase generation. Create passwords with custom length and character sets, or passphrases with a chosen number of words and a separator.
Multi-account support. See, switch between, and remove accounts from a single CLI session.
Machine-readable outputs. Use JSON or plain text modes for easy scripting and automation workflows.
Authentication. Log in securely with OAuth-based sign-in. Access tokens are stored in your operating system’s keychain, and your vault encryption key is never written to disk.
Benefits for Business users
The command line interface simplifies credential management for teams that rely on automation and terminal-based workflows. Users can inject passwords and API keys directly into the scripts and services they run, generate and rotate credentials without leaving the terminal, or read from shared folders without switching between apps.
Of course, vault actions performed via the CLI are recorded in the NordPass Activity Log alongside actions from other clients, so admins can keep an eye on the team’s activity for security and compliance purposes.
Benefits for Personal users
Individual users can also take advantage of the CLI to make their workflows faster. Whether you’re automating tasks, writing scripts, or managing complex configurations, you can generate, inject, and organize your credentials right in the terminal. This helps remove unnecessary distractions and keeps your process simple.
