Autofill, that NordPass feature that most of you know and love, is the reason you no longer need to type your passwords, credit card details, or personal information in online forms. Autofill has been a crucial part of NordPass ever since its launch. After all, simplifying and making digital life secure is what we do here.
However, today we’re excited to introduce to you a new, machine learning-enhanced autofill. Sounds cool? That's because it is. Let’s see what the new and improved autofill feature brings to the table and what’s so cool about it.
What’s changed?
In short, a lot has changed. The previous version of autofill was essentially a rule-based engine. Those rules were defined by us, the software engineers of NordPass. And so, each time you would choose to autofill your login credentials, credit card details, or personal information, the engine would check what kind of field it had to fill in according to those pre-set rules. Even though such an auto-filling method was effective, it wasn’t always reliable and efficient. Plus, it was a rather difficult model to maintain. That's why we started to consider the idea of a machine learning-enhanced autofill.
We saw an opportunity to employ new and exciting technologies to make one of the most loved features the best it could be. Both I and Karolis for a long time looked for a way to introduce Machine Learning to the process.

The new and improved autofill engine relies on machine learning, which for many software engineers – ourselves included – is a very exciting branch of artificial intelligence. Put simply, the autofill engine can now learn how to accurately categorize the field that it needs to fill in, whether it’s a sign-up, login, credit card, or personal information form. The algorithm that drives the new engine has been trained using artificial neural networks. Thanks to this, now the autofill functionality is correct at determining the type of form 99.6% of the time.

What does it mean for you, our users?
Besides the technical aspects, which can be very exciting for a software engineer like myself, the new machine learning-enhanced autofill is set to make your online experience even smoother. However, it’s important to highlight that the learning process of the algorithm is not intrusive, meaning that it will not take place on users’ devices. We, the NordPass software engineers, will do that and continue to release updates that will make the new engine even better.
