NordPass vs. LastPass: password manager comparison

Compare the key features NordPass and LastPass offer for protecting passwords, personal information, and online accounts. See how the two password managers differ and which option better fits your needs.

LastPass

Encryption

NordPass uses XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF, an advanced encryption method that LastPass does not use. While LastPass supports key salting with Argon2, XChaCha20 delivers strong performance on hardware without AES acceleration, resistance to timing attacks, straightforward implementation, and flexible security margins.

LastPass uses AES-256 encryption to protect vault data and uses PBKDF2-SHA-256 hashing with salting to derive keys.

Customizable password policies for vault-stored credentials

NordPass includes a customizable Password Policy that lets organizations define specific requirements for passwords saved in the vault. These rules help enforce stronger password standards and ensure that the Password Generator creates complex, randomized credentials. Businesses can also monitor whether users comply with internal policies, giving administrators clearer visibility and evidence that security requirements are being followed.

LastPass also provides password health reporting, security policies, and tools for identifying weak, reused, or compromised passwords. However, organizations should review how each platform applies custom password rules across generated, saved, imported, and existing credentials before choosing the best fit for their internal policy requirements.

Data breach scanner

NordPass provides detailed information about detected breaches, including exposed email addresses, hashed passwords, third-party system API keys, and banking details. Individual users can also monitor their credit cards for potential exposure.

LastPass also offers dark web monitoring and alerts users when monitored email addresses appear in breached credential databases. However, its public materials focus mainly on email-based monitoring, and it does not appear to offer direct credit card monitoring that is comparable to NordPass.

Account recovery

NordPass Business users can recover their accounts with a recovery code or, if the code is unavailable, by submitting a recovery request to the organization owner. Once approved, the user can create a new Master Password and regain access to their vault.

LastPass supports several account recovery options, including automatic recovery, one-time passwords, mobile biometric recovery, and master password hints or reminders. However, the availability of these options depends on the previous setup, trusted devices, or admin policies. If recovery options are not available, users may need to create a new account and re-enter their vault data.

Data recovery after a user is removed

NordPass allows organizations to recover data from a deleted user’s vault, including items that were never shared. This helps ensure important business information is retained, can be transferred to another user, and remains available to support business continuity.

LastPass Business super admins can transfer a departing user’s vault contents to another user as a shared folder before the original account is deleted, provided the necessary policy is enabled. Items already stored in shared folders can remain available to the organization if another administrator retains access.

Peer-to-peer credential sharing

NordPass provides granular permissions for shared items, giving users control over the level of access for each recipient. Time-limited sharing also lets users set an expiration period for access to shared credentials or other sensitive data.

LastPass supports peer-to-peer sharing but provides fewer permission options. Users can choose to either hide the shared password or allow recipients to view it.

Organization-wide control over shared items

NordPass Enterprise gives organization owners a centralized view of all shared folders and items directly shared through the Sharing Hub. Owners can see who owns each item or folder, who has access, and which permissions have been assigned. They can also grant, change, or revoke access, as well as transfer ownership where supported.

LastPass admins can view read-only information about shared folders and the users assigned to them. Super admins can access and manage shared folders when the relevant administrative policy is enabled. However, LastPass’s documented organization-wide controls primarily focus on shared folders rather than individual items shared directly between users.

TOTP authenticator with autofill and second-factor protection

NordPass includes a built-in Authenticator that stores and autofills TOTP codes across supported devices. Users can manage their passwords and two-factor authentication codes in one place. Biometric confirmation is required before a code can be viewed or autofilled.

LastPass also lets users store TOTPs with password items, sync them across devices, and autofill them during login. Users can separately enable multifactor authentication to add another verification step when accessing their LastPass vault.

Email masking

NordPass includes Email Masking in eligible plans, so users can create masked email addresses without connecting to a separate email-masking service.

LastPass does not currently include an email masking feature.

It is more reactive and works faster than the competition. NordPass also matches the cost-effectiveness ratio, but the bottom line is that it was selected because it is easy and convenient to use.
